Making messy fun

linda_neff_mug_2016In the Studio we’ve been offering Art Journal classes for well over a year. In January of this year we started a new version of the class titled ‘Art Journal Adventure.’

We’re working in a smaller format. I think the pad is about 5 inches by 9 inches. I’m really liking the smaller format and we’re able to keep the classes to its two-hour time limit.

As much as I enjoy the creative process, at times I tend to lose sight of that when I’m teaching. It’s my students who often remind me why I started teaching in the first place.

My goal in class is never to aim for perfection. I love to teach technique but I encourage students to play with that technique. If you’re questioning in your head ‘what would happen if I did this…’ then I say, go for it and see what happens! I think we all need to learn to play all over again. Throw out the rules and pull your product out and just sit and play!

Green_Door_Studio_art_journal320Creating art is good for the soul. It helps to relieve stress and calms the savage beast – if you don’t take it too seriously.

We gather in the Studio for class and almost immediately there’s friendly chatter among students. Students begin sharing stories – happy and sad. Creating art brings us together. The atmosphere is supporting and accepting and encouraging.

We make messes and create art. I wouldn’t have it any other way. If you like to make messes and want to create art with us, check out the calendar for upcoming classes.
