    It’s creative playtime!

It’s been nearly two years since I’ve taught classes in our studio/shop. I enjoyed the break but recently felt that urge to jump back in. I’m happy to say a terrific opportunity just opened up and I’m taking it. I’ve joined the Brighton Art Guild, a group full of so many talented artists, and a perk of membership is the availability to use their classroom alongside other teachers from the Guild. I’ve been able to prepare for a couple of classes quickly and you’ll find them listed here: Linda’s Shop. It’s quick and easy to purchase a class and you’ll also see the dates, times, and supply list. All of these…

    Through the years

***post written by Rachel Poniatowski*** On September 7th, Green Door Studio will have officially been open for 3 years. We started out on this crazy adventure after I was laid off from my job. I had always dreamed of having my own business, and my mom was out of her mind enough to be a willing participant. Since then, I have gotten married, moved around, had other jobs, quit working, and became more involved again in the business. Mom has been the consistent face of the business, and has worked her butt off to make it what it is today. Mom and me on opening day, September 7, 2013. We…

    Remembering Grandpa

Dennis and I were talking this morning in his room about junk that needs to be sorted and gotten rid of. As I was looking around he mentioned the stack of his mom’s pictures. They were sitting under a shelf in a storage cabinet, just out in the open. Under the pile of photos was a little brag book of photos called ‘Grandma’s Show-and-Tell. We opened it as we turned the pages we could see our two youngest kids grow up right before our eyes. Those photos brought back a flood of happy memories as both of our parents are gone now. We were fortunate our kids were able to…

    A canvas of many layers

It’s been a while since I’ve felt inspired to work on a canvas but now the ideas are just bursting around in my head and I can’t get them out fast enough! This is a 12-inch by 12-inch canvas. There’s such a variety of techniques showcased on this canvas. We’ll make these gorgeous flowers from hand-dyed coffee filters. The flowers are die-cut and I’ll show you how to roll them and to use several shades of paints to make them come to life. Pretty lace and silk ribbon is added – with a pearl-head stick pin – to create a shabby-chic look. Students will work with plaster gauze, paper strips…

    Studio continues to evolve

We often get asked just what is Green Door Studio. Truth be told, we don’t really have it figured out quite yet. We’re still evolving. When Rachel and I decided to open this business a little over two years ago our thoughts were that we would offer classes and sell our painted furniture. Over time the business has changed a bit but remains pretty close to what we had in mind. We still scour estate sales and auctions for pieces to redo and now we’ve expanded to custom painting. The custom painting has kept me really busy lately and I have commissions waiting to come in well into February. Classes…

    Facing the changes

My gosh! Where does the time go? Thanksgiving is here and it seems like just yesterday I was out West on vacation with the old guy. Thanksgiving dinner this year is at Rachel and Kevin’s. The newlyweds are hosting a family dinner for the lot of us. It’s been a crazy busy Fall since we made the decision to move the business. We pulled off the move to our new location and with the help of family and some good friends we were able to get the joint organized and up and running without closing for even one day! I’m back on schedule with the custom painting jobs and Rachel…

    Fall workshops

Even though temps are still pretty high around here my attention is focused on Fall – Fall workshops that is. I’ve been working on several projects this summer that will be offered this Fall as workshops and I wanted to share some sneak peeks with you all. My calendar is being updated as workshops get confirmed so check back often. The first is this Christmas-themed configurations tray using Graphic 45 papers, Art Glitter, Globecraft Memories and Xyron. Go figure! I managed to work them all into one project that I think you’ll love to display each year during the holiday season. We’ll work with acrylic paints, inks, embossing powders, fussy-cutting,…

Displaying fragments of a creative soul wannabe …

Remember the vintage letterpress trays I picked up at the Allegan Antique Market a while back? Yep, those trays. I think it was nearly two years ago that I came upon them thinking I’d create a shabby-chic style wall decor class. I started collecting bits and pieces of sewing items – old patterns, threads, buttons, thimbles, intending to work into a sewing theme, but I struggled with where and how to begin. So the trays continued to take up space in the garage. I turned many a magazine pages searching for inspiration; something to get me going. I shopped antique malls, searching for more little trinkets, treasures and ideas. I…
